General Guidelines

Congratulations on your admission to North Dakota State University . On behalf of the Association of Students from India , we take great pleasure in welcoming you to Fargo . Below are few suggestions to help you get started off on the right foot.

Travel booking and tips

  • It is recommended that you arrive in Fargo at least 7-10 days before the student orientation dates sent to you by the international office. Students without funding, are advised to arrive by early August (at least 3-4weeks before the classes begin), to try for alternate sources of funding. During the orientation your documents are checked at the university and you shall be cleared to register for classes.
  • Northwest airlines and United airlines along with their affiliated airlines cater to Fargo 's Hector International Airport . These flights are usually routed via Minneapolis , Chicago and Denver . Details: www.fargoairport.com.
  • You can block tickets from a good travel agent. You do not have to pay to block tickets. A direct flight is best to avoid airline changes, if this cannot be avoided, make sure you have at least 4-6 hours gap between the scheduled arrival and departure of the flights. Baggage is safer with a single airline. Some airlines do not handle baggage transfer and you will have to take care of it yourself if you change airlines.
  • Every person leaving India should have ECNR stamped on one of the rear pages of your passport. For detailed information, it is advisable to contact your travel agent. For questions on whether one needs Income Tax clearance certificate or sometimes, a Police Clearance certificate, it is advisable to contact your travel agent.
  • Confirm your flights two/three days before your departure.

Housing

  • It is very important for the students coming to NDSU to try and make prior arrangement for their accommodation. Getting accommodation in August / January is very difficult as most of the other international students are also trying for them. The ASI will make every effort to find each new student at least temporary accommodation.
  • You would have received the housing application form and mailing instructions in a separate letter from the Division of Residence Life, NDSU. If you wish to take up on-campus graduate housing, as most Indians do, complete the housing application, enclose the deposit, and mail it to them at the earliest. You can find more information at http://www.ndsu.edu/reslife/index.php .

Things to be done in advance

  • Learn driving and get an international license. This is valid for a year.
  • Learn to cook
  • Apply for a bank loan (if necessary)
  • Make passport valid for 6 months more than your stay indicated in your I-20
  • Get medical and dental check-ups done, they are very expensive here. Get your eyesight checked and get an extra pair of glasses.
  • Immunizations & Vaccinations: You are advised to have the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) injection, and get a certificate if possible for all the vaccinations you had when you were a child.
  • Write to the ASI PRESIDENT / VICE-PRESIDENT, giving your COMPLETE ITINERARY incl. flight #, date and time of arrival, enclosing your most recent photograph [passport size] if you need assistance with pickup and temporary accommodation.
  • Make a note of your parents' bank account.
  • Check with the airline you are flying with to find out about the luggage specifications; try not to exceed the weight requirements.
